Re: Best Practice XHTML / CSS - layout questions
firstly great work mike.
one thing that can be done is to change way the css is called and use
import which will break on older browsers giving them a really retro
text look rather than worrying if css degrades gracefully.
eg something like:
<style type="text/css" media="screen" title="Best Practice css template">@import url(/best_practice.css);</style>
instead of:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="best_practice.css" media="all" title="Best Practice css template">
One can put the mid col divs at top of xhtml so they appear at top of
these pages that won't css. indymedia.org.uk does this. It make
for better experiance using lynx, dillo, speech readers, etc even while
some one waits on slow connection for loading, to get mid col stories
first rather than list of other imcs.
btw indymedia.org.uk hopes to revamp it look and feel and sort out those
fixed font size and absolute positioning. (there has been temp hack to
lose the grey) we are waiting for dev server to be set up to test new
templates out, which being MIR can/will include new functionality.
talking of MIR someone has being playing with lots of stylesheet
gimmicks at
mir2.indymedia.de/
see:
lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/mir-coders/2004-January/001429.html
maybe we will see some of these come into dada one I like the 1,2 ,3 col
click at top left.
I have recently moved to being fan of pure stylesheet for layout see:
www.hotdesign.com/seybold/
css-discuss.incutio.com/
I look forward to getting such pure css layout on out imc scotland
dadaimc site ( scotland.indymedia.org ) after we get upgraded and
working, but that is another story, with not getting things sorted here.
cheers,
