Hi Glenn,

Does your current version of dada have the "auto-update" module? You
will need to enable it from the site admin menu.

From the .99.3 release notes:
www.dadaimc.org/mod/software/notes/dadaIMC/index.php

10) There is a new "auto-update" Module that may be installed from the
Administration page. This allows for easy updating of files, based on
version numbers and MD5 hashes of the files on your site, compared to a
master list at www.dadaimc.org/. A great way to release patches
and small version upgrades that don't require database schema changes. A
future update will allow you to save backup copies of files before
updating, to preserve any customizations you may have made.

I was able to upgrade from .99 to .99.3 via auto-update, although it did
not go smoothly. The biggest problem was probably with the updated
codebase also requiring an updating theme, meaning that trying to view
the updated site via the old theme would not work. Make sure you update
the default theme along with everything else.

Besides that, I'd recommend backing up both the PHP files and the
database and then doing an incremental auto-update. I.e. first site
root, then modules, and so on. It can also help to have the current
..99.3 tarball handy to copy in any files that auto-update misses.
Finally, it would help to enable both dada and php error logs, since
that would let you track down upgrade problems from database changes
(e.g. missing table columns).
