Modules

dadaIMC ships with a number of modules installed by default, for the quick implementation of an IMC site:

  • Features. The center column is usually occupied by Features, which can be either standalone summaries, or brief introductions pointing to other content on the site, whether a newswire article or a media file.
  • Articles. These are standard newswire articles, as with all IMCs. Users can designate both "Section" and "Category" as above, and can indicate whether or not the article is of "Local Interest to this IMC"
  • Media Gallery. Other IMCs, given their architecture, require users who simply want to upload photos to create an "article" containing nothing but images. The dadaIMC code created the Media Gallery to allow users to upload various media with captions and attributions without having to create a bogus "article" to wrap around the file upload. All media uploaded to accompany articles and features are also available to the Media Gallery, but their display can be toggled on or off in the Site Preferences.
  • InfoDoc. The InfoDoc library allows for the easy creation of informational text pages, such as the Mission Statement, Contact Info, or Donation information. No more need to upload new HTML files and hack in some links manually! InfoDocs can be created right in your browser, and the software automatically builds a table of contents and sidebar listing. You can even point to external documents, or have standalone sidebar boxes!
  • Auto-update. OK, it's not fully automated, but this new module makes it a breeze to update your site to the latest versions of files, as they are made available. Bug fixes, new capabilities, or new templates are available through a clean interface that examines the version numbers of all of your files, and compares them to a master list at this site. Installing the new files is just another easy point 'n' click.

In addition to these, there are a number of modules available to be installed with the simple click of a mouse:

  • The Otherpress. Too often, IMC "articles" are merely reposts of articles published elsewhere on the web. Recognizing the worthiness of other journalists' work, the Otherpress allows IMCs to have a section with pointers to articles published by other media outlets, reducing the clutter on the newswire while still allowing the information to be disseminated.
  • Razorwire. The razorwire is a short-lived "Alert Box" that appears at the top of the center column. It is used to cover urgent events unfolding in real time, allowing for by-the-minute updates of the situation. Razorwires can then be hidden and archived when no longer timely.
  • Fora. Implement multiple-category discussion fora for whatever topics you choose.
  • Links. A simple link database, which verifies links daily and tracks link hits.
  • Help. A system for adding icons (or link text) that creates a small JavaScript popup window with help or instructions for various aspects of the IMC site.
  • Picturebooks. The picturebook is a cross between the media gallery and the newswire, allowing an individual to post a page-navigated "photo essay," combining photos and text into a book-like format for browsing.
  • Assignments. Assign and track reporters, events, and supervising editors...for the really organized IMC.
  • Radicalendar integration. Seamless integration with the Radicalendar for iCalendar-compliant event announcements, including complex recurring events.
  • Polls. Create short opinion polls with multiple choice selections for fun and easy community feedback.
  • Feeder. Add arbitrary RSS feeds from other web sites directly into your pages.
  • List Archives. Create a searchable archive of your mailing list. Offer a web-based interface to subscribe and unsubscribe.
  • Acronyms (content). Create a list of key acronyms (IMC, FTAA, WTO) and have dadaIMC automatically wrap instances of these acronyms in the <acronym> tag for professional-looking results.
  • Searchlinks (content). Create a list of keywords and have dadaIMC automatically add a little "search" icon following those words in the body of an article. Clicking the icon automatically initiates a search on your site for other articles using that keyword.
  • Watchwords (content). Create a list of keywords and have dadaIMC automatically notify the Editors if any of them appear in an article submission. Great for quick notification of overtly racist or obscene posts.

Report Bugs

dadaIMC uses the Mantis bug-tracking system for bug reporting. Please use it! And check for existing reports of your bug before submitting a new one.

CVS

The current CVS version of dadaIMC is now browseable online. Be forewarned, though, that it is not always in a useable state as-is!
